Abstract

Effective monitoring of Pentatomidae in the Fergana Valley requires more than the repeated use of a single collecting method. Sampling devices are selective, habitats differ structurally, seasonal activity changes through the year, and unequal sampling effort can make apparently simple comparisons scientifically unreliable. This thesis develops an evidence-based framework for selecting field collection methods and standardizing sampling effort for Pentatomidae monitoring in agroecosystems of the Fergana Valley. The framework synthesizes published quantitative evidence on method selectivity together with the standardized field and metadata principles proposed for Pentatomidae material from the region. Sweep netting, hand collecting, beating, light attraction, overwintering-site search, and photography are assigned explicit effort units and are linked to target habitat, life stage, monitoring objective, and quality-control requirements. Published comparisons show why method choice must be objective-specific: in one study sweep netting produced the highest capture proportion (0.720) and Shannon diversity (H′ = 1.940), whereas other studies found strong advantages of Malaise or light-based trapping for different taxa and response variables. The proposed methodology therefore rejects the idea of a universally “best” collecting method and instead recommends a complementary design in which at least two methods are selected according to the target group and habitat, and all observations are expressed relative to measurable effort. A method-selection matrix and quality-control checklist are proposed for future empirical validation in the Fergana Valley. The thesis is methodological and does not claim new local abundance or species-richness estimates.
